What is the role of Gaussian Mixture Models in clustering? We are motivated by a recent proposal for generalizing Mixture Modeling in the context of clustering and related methods, by combining geometric and hyperbolic approaches [@DobrushinSchrieffer2014; @Eppstein2011; @Eppstein2015]. The purpose of this paper is to offer a concrete theoretical justification for the ability of Gaussian Mixture Models for clustering.
